Natasha is on the luxury tour of Renaissance Italy, meeting the greatest artists, the most ruthless Popes and mighty Medicis - the fathers of capitalism. But with this explosion of creativity comes huge upheaval. Toby sees this different side to the period when he stands in a muddy field talking to miserable peasants and when he is kidnapped by mercenaries.

We meet Marie Curie, a scientist with a glowing personality and the only person ever to win the Nobel Prize in two different sciences, physics and chemistry. Natasha crashes a date with the young Marie Skłodowska and her soon-to-be husband Pierre Curie. With no protective clothing, Toby joins the exciting hunt for radium in a poorly ventilated shed in Paris. Meanwhile, Marie stares down an enemy every bit as dangerous as radiation sickness - sexism.

Salem, Massachusetts: The mistrial of the century. Natasha gets to experience the frenzy of Salem life as the contagion of supernatural belief takes over the community. Toby spends his time shackled in prison with the bewildered and innocent accused. We examine a grizzly age never to be repeated: one where you could be judged by your peers instantly and have no recourse or path to redemption.

This episode unveils the secrets of the Rosetta Stone (it’s an ad) and the story behind the making of Stonehenge ('Have you ever seen a better henge?'). Natasha meets Easter Island rock carvers ('No refunds!') and Toby breaks at least one of the laws of the Hammurabi Code, with appropriately painful results. Ah, the Cold War. A time when Russia and America decided to prove their superiority by using former Nazi scientists to see who could first get into space and then to the moon. Following the Russian space program, Toby meets space dog Laika and participates in some less than successful launches. Natasha rubs shoulders with a bunch of US presidents including Kennedy when he commits to putting a man on the moon - a moment he will, tragically, never witness. This fact really surprises him when Natasha mentions it. Woops.

In a reversal of fortune, Toby finally gets to see the finer side of life. While Natasha spends time with the common people, Toby experiences life among the aristocracy, hobnobbing at fancy dinners and even enjoying a spot of cake. All just in time for the French Revolution. He also gets to hang out at the Bastille and scores some up close and personal time with Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Natasha, meanwhile, has her feet on the ground with the framers of the revolutionary constitution and makes her own unique contribution to the Reign of Terror.

Toby rides along with the most feared and brutal conqueror of all time, Genghis Khan, as he unites tribes of the Steppes, crushes his enemies, and burns all that lies in his wake. Elsewhere, Natasha mediates between the Great Khan and his blood brother Jamukha before getting useful tips from Genghis on storming the Great Wall of China.
