Resumen del editor

In rural North Carolina in 1951, despite parental reassurances, a typhoid shot hurt. It hurt even more when the children saw who would be administering the shot: Miss Winnie, a large, dictatorial nurse who had been "especially built by the nursing school so she would never blow away in a hard wind". In this hilarious epic tale, our young hero learns three valuable lessons: avoiding pain only heightens it, a mother's wrath can hurt worse than a shot, and growing up sometimes involves choosing the lesser of two evils.

In "Tonsils," young Davis comes face-to-face with a creature known as a "nurse-nun" when he has to get his tonsils removed. This humorous account of a tonsillectomy performed on Good Friday in a Catholic hospital pops with Davis' usual firecracker wit and humor.

Reseñas de la crítica

"A master of timing, Davis measures some sentences drop by drop, pouring others out like water from a pitcher." (Smithsonian Magazine)

Reseñas editoriales

Davis presents a new story that adds to his repertoire of small-town North Carolina tales. Embellishing the colorful characters he recalls or creates from his childhood, Davis draws on episodes and events involving family, school buddies and hometown folks. With immense charm and a wry wit, he captures the humor of rural boyhood. He sets the scene with a few well-chosen descriptions and then lets events evolve. Davis gives listeners a joyous sense of anticipation. If Miss Winnie is your first encounter with Davis, it certainly not be your last. The story delights but also tilts the conventional view of childhood fears and injustices. Most everyone has dreaded a doctor's shot, but few ever get to play out the hilarious episode as Davis does in Miss Winnie.
